Hi,

Try the following steps to uninstall and reinstall SQL Server 2008 R2.
1. Make sure you have administrative rights on the computer and use "run as administrator" option to run the setup if uac is enabled.
2. Uninstall the existing SQL Server 2008 R2 and all the components from the control panel. Remember to backup the user databases before uninstalling SQL Server.
3. Backup the registry.
4. Delete the following keys in regedit:
--HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
--HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
5.  Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall  and delete all the sub-keys referencing SQL Server.
6.  Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and delete all the keys referencing SQL Server.
7.  Rename all the SQL Server folders in the computer.
8.  Download and install Windows Cleanup Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290301
Run the utility and remove any SQL Server components that you find.
9. Reboot the machine
10. Reinstall SQL Server 2008 R2

If you have any more questions, please let me know.
Thanks.

Answer 2

Hi,

Thank you for your response.

I have followed the steps you mentioned, except the one about Windows Cleanup Utility, because your link does not point to any downloadable resources.

I am trying now to reinstall but the installation  process stops suddenly with no message or UI signals when it reaches the following steps:

ExecuteStandardTimingWorkflow ... then the window just disappears and nothing happens.

I have the following errors in my event log:

.NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_32) - Failed to compile: C:\Program Files\Microsoft sql  Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Binn\sqltoolsmailutilities.dll . Error code = 0x80131047

Any idea of what's wrong ?

Hi,

I suggest you reinstall, .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. If your operation system is windows  7, you need to enable .net Framework 3.5.1 on by using the following steps:
a) Run "appwiz.cpl" from windows run dialog
b) In the explorer, click "Turn Windows features on or off" on the left
c) In dialog "Windows Features", find out "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1" and check the checkbox in front of it
d) Click "OK"

If it still fails, please provide us the error messages logged into the setup log files which are located in the %Program files%\Microsoft sql  server\100\Setup bootstrap\Log\ folder. For more information about how to View and Read SQL server  Setup Log Files, please see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143702.aspx.

Once you collect the file, you also could first send me an email at sqltnsp_at_microsoft_dot_com with the thread link. Then I will reply you via email to let you know how to upload the  files to us.

If you have any more questions, please let me know.
Thanks.

Answer 4

Hi,

.Net Framework 3.5.1 was already installed on the machine.

I have followed your instruction, and I have sent you an email.

I have the log installation  files, let me know how to upload it.

Regards,

Answer 5

Hi Nicolas,

Thanks for your mail. However, could you upload all the subfolders and files under  %Program files%\Microsoft sql  server\100\Setup bootstrap\Log?

Best Regards,
Wendy

Answer 6

Hi,

I have received your log files. However, it only indicates the setup pass the system configuration check. In this case, you may consider contacting Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) to open a case, which should be the best way to identify the root cause of this issue I think.

If you have any more questions, please let me know.
Thanks.

Answer 7

Hi,

I don't think I get your answer; does it mean you are not following the case ? are some information in my log files missing ?

How should I contact Customer Support Service ?

Thank you for your help,

Regards,

Answer 8

Hi,

Since I cannot find any useful information nor error messages from your SQL Server setup log files, maybe you need to use another tools to capture the error inforamtion, such as Process Monitor. Microsoft Customer Support Services(CSS) will help your to  further research your issue. You could call or contact CSS on http://support.microsoft.com.

If you have any more questions, please let me know.
Thanks.

Answer 9

Hi,

I have done a complete uninstall and have started the installtion again. I don't have the same issue, and my log files seems to be different.

Should I upload these log files to you ?

Regards,

Answer 10

Answer 12

Hi,

Thank you for your unloading again. Based on the setup log files, the detail error information is logged in sql_engine_core_inst_CPU32_1.log, as follows:
MSI (s) (A4:D4) [13:40:35:513]: Machine policy value 'TransformsSecure' is 0
MSI (s) (A4:D4) [13:40:35:513]: User policy value 'TransformsAtSource' is 0
MSI (s) (A4:D4) [13:40:35:513]: Machine policy value 'DisableUserInstalls' is 0
MSI (s) (A4:D4) [13:40:35:513]: Specified instance {B5153233-9AEE-4CD4-9D2C-4FAAC870DBE2} via transform :InstID01.mst;:InstName01.mst is already installed. MSINEWINSTANCE requires a new instance that is not installed.
MSI (s) (A4:D4) [13:40:35:513]: MainEngineThread is returning 1639

From the above error it says that the instance is already installed and hence the registry wasn’t fully cleaned up during the uninstalling, even though uninstalling from Add/Remove Program was successful. To work around the issue, you need to manually remove the leftover registry key.

In this case, the GUID in sql_engine_core_inst_CPU32_1.log is B5153233-9AEE-4CD4-9D2C-4FAAC870DBE2. So search for 3323515B-EEA9-4DC4-C2D9-2EBD078AAFA in the registry. Generally, it is located in HKLM/SOFTWARE/Classes/Installer/Products/{GUID}. Remember to backup your registry and then remove the key.

If you have any more questions, please let me know.
Thanks.

Answer 13

Now I have got the following error:

TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.

------------------------------

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

MsiGetProductInfo failed  to retrieve ProductVersion for package with Product Code = '{B5153233-9AEE-4CD4-9D2C-4FAAC870DBE2}'. Error code: 1608..

------------------------------

I think I won't get it...

Answer 14

Hi,

It seems that the other leftover registry key still exists. In this case, GUID is B5153233-9AEE-4CD4-9D2C-4FAAC870DBE2, Therefore, you need to byte reverser the first part from B5153233 to 3323515B  and search B5153233 in the registry. If you find the matches, delete them. Remember to backup the registry before any modification.

Please refer to a similar thread about MsiGetProductInfo failed  to retrieve ProductVersion for package during install:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlsetupandupgrade/thread/89eb8038-68a6-4201-a784-aa0063f4d8c0/

If you have any more questions, please let me know.
Thanks.
